The Exocortex: Reducing the Friction of Shared Understanding

Following a brief hiatus for Easter, this week’s update from Boston focuses on the philosophical and practical foundations of Auki Labs. We are moving beyond simple signal transfer to the literal enhancement of human understanding through the launch of the exocortex and the expansion of the real-world web into three new dimensions.

The Mission: Increasing Intercognitive Capacity

Every era-defining company has a "forever task." Apple reduces the friction of individual creativity. Amazon reduces the friction of commerce. Auki reduces the friction of shared understanding.

Our mission is to increase the intercognitive capacity of civilization. This is not merely about sending faster signals; it is about using technology—specifically augmented reality and spatial computing—to arrive at intersubjective moments where we experience the world the same way.

"Nothing feels more human than shared understanding."

Language was our first form of augmented reality, used to manifest knowledge and imagination in the minds of others. We believe that shared AR is the future of language—a necessary level-up for human-to-human, human-to-robot, and robot-to-robot interfaces.

Launching the Exocortex: A Harness for AI Collaboration

To build the real-world web, we need to stay aligned. Today, we are announcing the exocortex, a system designed to maintain shared context across multiple collaborators.

The exocortex acts as a harness for your AI agents (such as Claude or Codex). It helps maintain memory over time and across an entire organization, allowing for fewer meetings and greater collective intelligence.

  • Internal Success: The exocortex has already fundamentally changed how we work internally at Auki over the last two weeks.
  • Open Source: We are open-sourcing the exocortex repository on GitHub, along with our new SDK roadmap and standards definitions for the real-world web.
  • Collaborative Maintenance: By plugging into the exocortex and reading the Auki documentation, the community can direct their AI compute tokens toward building the real-world web and earn tokens back through bounties.

The Future of Governance and the 3D Internet

We believe the future of decentralized governance lies in human-AI pairs. While humans can be fallible or easily distracted, human-AI pairs can stay strictly mission-aligned over the long term.

To get there, the internet must grow in three new dimensions. We are building the infrastructure for:

  1. An Internet of Spaces: Digital devices with a shared sense of space.
  2. An Internet of Sensors: Collaborative perception of the physical world.
  3. An Internet of Actuators: Coordinated machine action in real space.
